Cock-of-the-Rock Wildlife Lodge

The Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge offers the world's best Andean Cock-of-the-Rock experience in a pristine cloud forest reserve.

The Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge is located in Peru in the pristine Manu cloud forest on the verdant eastern slopes of the Andes and is part of the Tropical Nature conservation system (see Our Mission). Opened in 1997, it is named after the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru's large, bright-red national bird that puts on a colorful, noisy mating display adjacent to the lodge every morning. Spectacled Bears, Woolly Monkeys, Brown Capuchin Monkeys, quetzals and a host of other colorful birds inhabit the surrounding forest, and a bubbling mountain stream tumbles past the lodge.

Situated at an elevation of 5000 feet (1600 meters) in the cool, mosquito-free Kosñipata Valley close to the wild Cusco-Shintuya road, the lodge protects and supports a 12,500-acre private cloud forest reserve. It consists of 10 double-occupancy bungalows with private bath facilities, and a separate complex with a large dining room. A local highland family staffs the lodge, and they also work as rangers, patrolling the private reserve.

Wildlife

The male Andean Cock-of-the-Rock bird presents his mating display in an area minutes from the lodge. This display area is the avian equivalent of a singles bar, and the males must perform an elaborate dance to attract females. The Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge has exclusive access to this site where guests can observe this strange ritual from a blind 15 feet away. From here, the blazing-red males strut, bow and squawk in a frantic attempt to prove that they are the most attractive mate. This blind provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see an unforgettable wildlife spectacle.

Your journey to the lodge is also filled with wildlife, as it passes through two Andean mountain chains with altitudes of up to 13,100 feet and across the beautiful puna grassland. This is the habitat of the rare Huemal Deer, Vizcachas, Mountain Caracara and the giant Andean Hummingbird. As the road reaches the eastern edge of the Andes it plunges downwards, past remnant patches of elfin forest, through swirling mist and clouds, to emerge in a forest of stunted evergreen trees, draped with mosses, lichens and bromeliads.

The cloud forest reserve protected by the lodge supports the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, two species of quetzals, the Woolly Monkey and mountain toucans. The Spectacled Bear-the only species of bear found in South America-lives here, and has been observed foraging just steps from the lodge. Along the banks of cascading waterfalls, mountain streams and within orchid-and-bromeliad-festooned cloud forest canopies live Torrent Ducks, Andean Dippers, Amazonian Umbrellabirds, tanagers, hummingbirds and a dazzling variety of other wildlife.
